The Routes

All 2017 routes include an optional ascent of Mill Mountain.  This climb, if ridden, will extend your ride by ~6 miles.  Total elevation gain (or elevation avoided) is ~900 ft.  Details of each route including the climb up Mill Mountain are shown below.  Additional links are provided for each route without Mill Mountain.  You don’t have to decide now (or during registration) whether you take on the climb or not.  You will make the decision the day of when you arrive at the bottom of Mill Mountain.

The 2017 Gran Fondo starts with the challenging passage of Pitzer Road and Coopers Cove Road.  Numerous short but steep climbs punctuate these roads within the first 20 miles of the ride.  The route then heads south and southwest covering many more (but less seveve) rolling hills.  Before reaching Callaway, VA the route turns north.  After first passing the Chaos Mountain Brewery riders bear left and take on the new gravel climb up Adney Gap (KOM segment).    After cresting the summit the route again go south (and downhill!) on Callaway Road.  For 10 miles the road mostly points downhill until actually entering Callaway, VA.  The route then passes Chaos Mountain Brewery for a second time after which riders bear right and tackle the climb of Cahas Mountain (KOM segment).  A narrow (use caution!) descent follows as riders drop back to the outskirts of town. For the last 20 or so miles the unrelenting, short, and sharp climbs return. Upon returning to town riders can choose to tackle the climb of Mill Mountain (KOM segment) or return straight back to the start to enjoy hot food and cold drinks.

The 2017 Medio Fondo is largely unchanged from last year.  The route starts with the challenging passage of Pitzer Road and Coopers Cove Road.  Numerous short but steep climbs punctuate these roads within the first 20 miles of the ride.  The route then heads south and southwest covering many more (but less seveve) rolling hills.  Before reaching Callaway, VA the route turns north and passes the Chaos Mountain Brewery before tackling the climb of Cahas Mountain (KOM segment).

The all new 2017 Piccolo Fondo is a manageable circuit around the south side of Roanoke City.  The route features short and steep climbs but in quantities far less than the Gran and Medio routes.  Riders will surely enjoy the lazily downhill ride on Bandy Road.  Just like the other routes, when returning to town rides have the option to tackle the ascent of Mill Mountain.  Hot food and cold drinks await everyone!
